YOUNG people with special needs will be raring to go next term after their school took delivery of a new Pounds 50,000 minibus.

The Meadows Special School, Leek, will use the Ford Transit vehicle to take students to sporting events across the Moorlands and beyond and on other school trips.

It has been presented to the school by The Lord’s Taverners, the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity, which covered half the cost.

The rest of the money was raised by the school.

Headteacher Chris Williams said: “The minibus was delivered during the last week of term and was immediately put to use ferrying our sixthformers to a barbecue in Tittesworth.

“In the course of a school week, we have lots of events which require transport, including a session with Riding for the Disabled in Endon, fishing at Fenton, and trips on the narrow boat Beatrice up the Caldon Canal.

“These are in addition to a huge range of sporting fixtures.

“Sport is a big focus in our school, so I know the new vehicle will be well used.”

The Meadows had a previous minibus which was bought before the school began admitting pupils with more complex needs.

The old vehicle did not have adaptations, such as a tail lift to help wheelchair users.

It meant the school had to book taxis instead.
